New York City Magicians

Go Wild!

John and his friends will be taking your students on a wild (and imaginary) tour of their backyards, neighborhoods, and community parks. Through magic, puppetry, music, and storytelling, John and his crazy puppets will teach your young readers about the Scientific Process and how we can all use science to answer everyday questions.  From North America's only marsupial, the possum, to color changing lizards, inventive birds, and animals and rocks that change forms, John will explore the natural world with your children and teach them along the way.

In addition, the students learn about the importance of recycling and how they can begin simple steps to take ownership of their environment.  Get ready for another fun, educational, hilariously entertaining program that will have your kids racing for books and talking about the show months after it's over.

The "Say No" Magic Show

This show is a very highly motivational program that teaches the children about the dangers of drugs and the consequences of taking drugs. The magic and the message are combined to motivate the children to SAY NO!

The show is jampacked with plenty of audience participation, ventriloquism, comedy, music and the appearance of a live dove and bunny rabbit.

Children are able to remember messages for a long time because they are having fun while they are learning. Today, kids need good role models to follow and John shares his own personal stories, including his involvement with NYC Police Department.

John teaches the children through motivational techniques that they can do anything they put their minds to and become anything they want to be when they grow up. And the entire content of the show is presented in a non-threatening, fun-filled manner.

John has worked in the S.P.E.C.D.A (School Program to Educate and Control Drug Abuse) and the DARE program while he was a NYC Police Officer. He has combined his years of knowledge as a Police Officer with his magical talents to provide a message that the children will never forget!

Messages from the Show:

Don't give into peer pressure!

Be a leader, not a follower!

Positive alternatives to taking drugs!

Feel good about yourself - YOU ARE SPECIAL!

You CAN do anything YOU put your mind to!

School is IMPORTANT!

Stranger Danger

The sad truth is that our young children are being abducted at an alarming rate. Everyday more and more children are missing in every state across the USA. No one is exempt…not even the children in your school or day care.

"The Stranger Danger Show" is designed to teach very young children about the dangers of strangers. Everything is done in a non-threatening manner. While the children are having fun and laughing, they will also learn about "Calling 911" and "What To Do IF I Get Lost".

How and Why the "Stranger Danger" Show is So Effective at Educating Young Children

This program is approximately 40 minutes long and has 6 important features:

1. Entertainment & Education. Children learn about the dangers of strangers in a non-threatening and entertaining way. The combination of entertainment and education is one of the best ways to teach young children. Why? When kids are having fun and enjoying themselves they are more receptive to the ideas
and messages being presented.

2. Magic. Kids love magic. They really enjoy watching it. Things appear and disappear. It is colorful and visual and young children can relate to it. Magic is used to illustrate key points, so when the children remember the magic trick, they remember the message as well.

3. Puppetry. The highlight of my program is when I introduce my puppet named "Magic Mouse". This is a very funny character that kids can identify with and, because they identify with him, they listen to him. Here is where they learn about what a stranger looks like. Many children think that a stranger is mean and ugly. Magic Mouse speaks the truth: a stranger can look like anybody.

4. Storytelling. As I mentioned, my goal in this program is to not only teach children about personal safety, but to help them understand who to go to if they need help. I teach the children what number to call to get help. They are NEVER too young to learn. By telling stories about how other children were tricked by strangers, they will realize that NOT everyone is their friend.

5. Audience Interaction. As you know, kids don't want to just sit and watch, they want to get involved. Great! When they're involved, they're learning. This high-energy program gets the kids involved and keeps their attention.

6. This show is geared for YOUNG children! It is not a "graphic program". This show does NOT scare them or intimidate them in any way. They are made to feel comfortable and relaxed. The "Stranger Danger" show gets the point across without any undue fear. It is performed in a fun, humorous, and uplifting way.

"Read and Grow" Magic Show

At the age of 12, John learned magic from his local Library in Brooklyn, NY. He learned coin tricks and card tricks and loved mystifying his friends. Starting a magic club and becoming the president, John was able to teach other children the art of magic. The meetings were held at the library and in return for the use of the library, John and his friends put on free shows for the public. This is how it all started for John Carlson!

John's "Read & Grow Magic Show" was customized for the State of New Jersey's Summer Reading theme. The show includes magic, ventriloquism, audience participation, comedy, music, and the appearance of Snowflake the dove and Reader Rabbit the bunny.

While the children are laughing and being mystified they are also learning about the importance of reading, setting goals, and believing in themselves. Ultimately the message motivates them to read more and John shares how reading helped him to become a good magician.
